Author and others were imprisoned on this Island in Eastyern Indonesia, mainly for political reasons. As writing material was forbidden author compiled the story by heart, orally spread amongst his fellow prisoners. The story is set in 1898 and 1899 set on Java 1898 and 1899, the beginning of the end of dutch colonial oppression, seen through the eyes of a Javanese boy.
