A very good copy of this famous Lives of the de Witt brothers possibly by Gerard Brandt, prolific author and responsible for many publications in this field: 'Het leven en Bedrijf van Michiel de Ruiter', 'Het leeven van ... Hooft', 'Leven van Joost van' den Vondel', etc. His son Caspar Brandt was responsible for the Life of Hugo de Groot, publ. in the early 18th c. : Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe as Book illustrator, see items 26 and 47, Lambert van den Bosch 'De Reysende Mercurius' (1673) & Anonymously published [G.Brandt?], 'Historisch Verhael' (1677). The 2 portraits and the plate of the hanging appeared in the 'Reysende Mercurius' and were used in a second state in the 'Historisch Verhael' 4 years later. The 'Historisch Verhael' was certainly not written by Lambertus van den Bosch, due to the fact that Cornelis de Witt [allegedly] took his position as Conrector of the Illustrious School of Dordrecht away from him, as a result of van den Bosch's licentious and drunken behaviour. Van den Bosch then wrote his 'Reysende Mercurius', dipping his pen in venom and attacking Cornelis de Witt. NNBW vol. VI, pp. 184 - 186:
