Its first name was given by the Dutchman Abel Tasman, the great Dutch explorer who was the first European to visit the Tonga islands. A vast lake with fresh water made the island very popular with all seafarers. Rotterdam Eiland is now called Nomuka, one of the Tonga islands in the Polynesian Archipelago.
