Title: 'Ternate'
Description: Amsterdam, Harlingen, Conrad, Van der Plaats. No date [Originally 1665 or 1693; here ca. 1780-85]. Obl. 4to. Copperengr. view from Nieuhof, signed lower left 'J. v. Schley direx'. Depicting the city of Ternate and the vulcano Gamalama. 18th c. Meas. appr. 18 x 21. Dutch and French captions and legenda. Originally from the Dutch Nieuhof, 'Het Gezandtschap der Nederlandtsche Oost Indische Compagnie..', 1665 or 1693, here in the re engraved version by Van der Schley for the 'Nederlandsche Reizen' 1784-1787?? In 1607 this Portuguese stronghold was captured by the VOC. The fortress near the city of Ternate was destroyed and rebuilt under the new name Oranje'. Ternate was the seat of the Governor General until the foundation of Batavia in 1619. See Landwehr VOC, items 272 and 539:
