Title: [18th century decree on slavetrading in Suriname]
Description: 's Gravenhage, Isaac Scheltus, 1789. Plano with 3 colums of text and large decorated initial and small allegorical woodcut in the upper-margin. Size: ca. 32.5 x 42,0 cm. - Professionally restored (washed), tears repaired with japanese fibers, some of the waterstaining still visible.* Extremely rare document that was distributed in the West-Indies (Suriname) and was either nailed to the wall or read out loud in public places. This document mentions that the economic success of the Dutch colony was dependend on the amount of labour thus connecting it with the trade in slaves from West-Africa. It sets regulations on how these slave-transactions should occure and even encourages this practice. Not in Knuttel. Published in: Winkels (1816).
