Volume I starts with 154 pages of extensive chronological tables (Roman period, Gregorian calendar, Dates, etc.) The next 13 chapters give a thorough treatment of the different aspects of paleography as e.g. style, formulae, different kind of paper, ink, writing and different lettering, abbreviations, punctuation, correction, cipher-systems, estimation of age etc. The second volume is devoted to the science of seals and counter-seals (royalty, clergy, nobility). Complete with the two appendixes containing 17 facsimile-plates with many examples of writings from manuscripts and diplomas, each with commentary and all 20 folding plates with tissue-guards exhibiting a profuse number of seals, again extensively described.
