Pp. xviii, 142. Illustrated soft cover. Published in the series "Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology". The Yanomamö Indians live in southern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil. This study is about a fierce people who engage in chronic warfare. Their culture, in its major focus, reverses the meaning of "good"and "desirable"as phrased in the ideal postulates of the Judaic-Christian tradition. A high capacity for rage, a quick flash point, and a willingness to use violence to obtain one's ends are considered desirable traits. As individuals however, they seem to be people playing their own cultural game, with internal feelings that at times may be quite divergent from the demands placed upon them by their culture. This valuable case study considers the relationship between the individual and his culture. Illustrated with 3 tables and 36 illustrations (b/w photographs, 2 maps, drawings and diagrams), a glossary and bibliography. Good copy. Offered for EUR 12.00 = appr.
