London, Alfred W. Bennett, 1862-1864. Two volumes. Small 4to, pp. [8], 228; [8], 224. Original red shagreen gilt decorated covers. Gilt spine on 5 raised bands. All edges gilt. Illustrated with 52 [of 53] tipped-in album photographs, in addition to engraved vignettes throughout. One of the first examples of books illustrated with actual photographs. ["The reader is no longer left to suppose himself at the mercy of the imaginations, the caprices, or the deficiencies of artists, but to have before him the genuine presentment of the object under consideration"]. Beautiful images showing people as well as buildings. All photographs in fine condition. Photographs by W.R. Sedgfield, S. Thompson, G.W. Wilson, F. Bedford, R. Fenton, T. Ogle, Dr. Hemphill and McLean & Melhuish. Photographs of Iona, Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Elgin Cathedral, Melrose Abbey, Kenilworth Castle & c. [The photograph of Rieveaux Abbey unfortunately not present]. The second series with William Howitt as sole author. The two volumes uniformly bound in the luxury edition [i.e. no photo-illustrations mounted on front and back cover, but these elaborately sculptured in gilt]. Front joints [as usual] slightly weakening, inner hinges tight. Very good set.
