GRATIANUS ( DE CLUSIO). - Decretum. (Incipit concordia discordantium canonum).GRATIANUS ( DE CLUSIO). Decretum. (Incipit concordia discordantium canonum).
Venetiis, Johannis Colonie agrippinensis & Johannisqz Manthe, 1479. Loose incunable leaf, large folio (29 x 42,5 cm) in portfolio. With the Glossa ordinaria of Bartholomaeus Brixiensis. Edited by Petrus Albinianus Trecius. Leaf e 9 (unsigned) of the Venetian impression by Johann von Köln and Johann Manthen. Probably not printed on December 11th 1479 as stated, but (according to Goff) January 3d 1480. Beautifully printed (like a manuscript) in black and red. Rubricated in red and blue and with red and blue lombards. Text 2 columns, 57 (recto) and 50 (verso) lines. Commentary 2 columns, 74 lines. Many two-line initials in red and blue. Gratian, the father of systematic study of canon law, lived in the 12th century at Bologna, the medieval centre of civil and canon law. He was born in the late 11th century in Central Italy and died before 1159. He initiated a new branch of learning, the study of church law as a discipline distinct from theology. His compilation, the Concordantia discordantium canonum ( later called the Decretum) tried to reconcile earlier contradictory canons by scholastic methods. The Decretum (supplemented with later commentaries) remained the basis of the Corpus Iuris Canonici (the Corpus of Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church) throughout the next centuries. It was only with the codification of 1917 that it was set out of use. One corner stained, but otherwise a well kept and very nice example of a fine Venetian incunable.
