David Roberts was born in Edinburgh in 1796. In 1838-39 he traveled to the Middle East (Egypt and Nubia, Sinaï, Palestine, Jerusalem and Lebanon). The Victoria and Albert Museum has 248 lithographs, engraved after his drawings on this journey. Sixty of these have been reproduced in this volume (a.o. the Giseh Pyramids, Luxor Obelisk, Abu-Simbel, the Mosques in Cairo and Suez, the Rocks of moses, Petra, Nablus, Hebron, Tower of David in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Carmel Tiberias, Sidon, Ruins of Baalbek). These series of lithographs visualized splendidly the Holy Land for his contemporaries and gave him great fame. Work as new in a very good slipcase. A sumptuous publication. 1100 gram.
