Pictorial hard cover. With the large (90 x 61 cm) folding map of central Washington D.C. (loose as issued) showing the location of 67 bawdy houses, each of them with the number of prostitutes working there. The first part of the work (Washington during the civil war and its bawdy houses) contains 37 old photographs of persons, buildings &c. Furthermore it contains tables with the number of "inmates" and evaluations (from 1 = best to 4 and even "very low") of 85 establishments (including 12 Colored Bawdy Houses) by the Military Provost Office. The 2nd part (The mapping of Washington, D.C.) has 2 photographs, an old engraving and a full-page map showing the defenses of Washington. The 3d part (the sporting Guide of 1895 shows facsimiles of 26 pages of advertisements, most of them for the "most commodious houses" like Bessie Dean, Daisy Mills, Mad. La Roy &c). The author is a graduate of Stanford University where he studied history and medicine. With an index. Ex bibliotheca Büch, met zijn aankoopnotitie "Washington D.C. 17 VII 1997". Book and map as new. Amusing, but also sad as e.g. the very explicit photograph of an unfortunate private, dying of a particularly virulent case of syphilis. 460 gram.
