Read (1840-1890) joined the Confederate Navy in 1861. He commanded the Confederacy's warship CSS McRae, served on the ironclad CSS Arkansas during its engagement on the Mississippi river and later on the CSS Florida. As a raider off the eastern coast of the United States he captured 21 merchant vessels. He was taken prisoner, escaped and was recaptured and thereafter exchanged. He later commanded a squadron of torpedo boats on the James River south of Richmond. Richly illustrated, with 7 appendices, notes, bibliography and index. Ex Bibliotheca Büch.
