Scattered through the coastal mountains of Southern California are many intriguing painted caves and rock outcrops. Reminders of the early Chumash Indians, the paintings remained little known because of their location in dense brush and mountainous terrain. The author increased the number of known sites in the Chumash region from 19 to 80. The paintings range in size from a few feet to more then forty feet in length. They had symbolic and religious meaning. Th work starts with a treatment of the land, the history of the people and their culture (houses, society, language, religion &c) before going to the paintings themselves (location, subject maytter, techniques, techniques, style, meaning &c).
