Description: Published by Paris, Smits, L’an second de la République Française, 1794 , 311/ 381/ 301/ 328/ 313 pp., not ill., half-leather bindings with marmered fron(vieux style), good set, Maurice de Saxe crowned his career as the commander of the French forces that invaded Belgium, during the War of the Austrian Succession, in the years 1744-1748, with a stupendous string of great success: Fontenoy, Bruxelles, Lafelt, Bergen-op-Zoom, Maastricht. It made him one of the foremost generals of his age. His personal papers were published in 1794, when the French Revolution was well underway. The massive collection of battle orders, battle reports and correspondence with his superiors in aris, however chaotic and incomplete, could still, the editor argued, be of great benefit to the French revolutionary generals, who were also and again campaigning on the same territory. And so it can be to the modern reader, who would like to know which batallion marched where and when, with what armament and with what assignment, or how many cannon and generals were captured, or how many officers and men were killed or wounded.
