Title: APERCU HISTORIQUE SUR LA MAISON IMPÉRIALE DES ENFANTS-TROUVES A MOSCOU
Description: Moscou 1883, 30 pp., 1 b&w photo, Small but unique overview of the famous Moscow Orphanage. Created by Tsarina Catherine II in 1764, managed by general Betskoi, provided with personal consultation by the French intellectual Denis Diderot, the Moscow Orphanage was not a charitable solution for abandoned children and orphans but an experiment in social engineering. Leave the children to the state, which is better at raising and educating them than natural parents, and soon enough a new and better society will appear, glorifying the State. A direct precursor of the social engineering during the Soviet Union. Fittingly, the huge buildings, having survived even the Moscow fire of 1812, after the Revolution of 1917 were occupied by a series of subsequent Soviet state departments, and were lately even considered as a candidate to house the Russian Parliament.
