Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full cloth, gilt lettering to spine including publisher's name and publication date at foot, small old ownership ticket neatly placed underneath, sides decorated in blind, chalked yellow endpapers; cloth wrinkled, soiled with some loss of colour and gloss in places, first few leaves trifle spotted. In fine internal condition, very clean and neat. ¶ ~ First French edition. Translated from the 4th German edition by A. Kuhn and D. M. Levi. Anton Friedrich von Tröltsch (1829-1890), pioneer of modern otology. Professor of Otology at Würzburg, where renowned otologists Friedrich Bezold (1842-1908) and Abraham Kuhn (1838-1900) were his students. He invented the modern otoscope and devised the first modern mastoid operation which was first performed in England in 1868 by Hinton. Tröltsch was a co-founder of the Archiv für Ohrenheilkunde.
