Professor of Otology at Würzburg, where renowned otologists Friedrich Bezold (1842-1908) and Abraham Kuhn (1838-1900) were his students. He invented the modern otoscope and devised the first modern mastoid operation which was first performed in England in 1868 by Hinton. Tröltsch was a co-founder of the Archiv für Ohrenheilkunde.
