Title: De militaire spectator, of aanteekeningen van een krijgsgevangen' Engelsch officier, ooggetuige der gebeurtenissen in Parijs, gedurende de laatste vier maanden der regering van Napoleon, vóór zijne verbanning naar Elba.
Description: Amsterdam, G. Portielje, 1827. Octavo. Pp. viii, 155. Large engraved title-vignette. Engraved title-page. Half-title 'De Militaire Spectator'. Hardcover, bound in contemporary half cloth and marbled boards; light foxing to title. In fine condition. A very well kept copy. ¶ ~ First edition. Very rare. Only 3 copies are located worldwide, all are in the Netherlands (Dutch Defence Libraries; Koninklijke Bibliotheek; University of Amsterdam). The identity of the POW 'British Officer' remained a mystery and it is just as well a fictitious personality. In any event the source for the book is an article in the German magazine 'Unterhaltungsblätter für Welt- und Menschenkunde' which the publisher, Gerrit Portielje, saw sometime in 1826 and translated into Dutch. No further biographical details were provided or could ever be found.
