Description: Paris, Firmin Didot, 1813. Two volumes in one. Octavo. Pp. (iv), 169, (2); 172, (2). Plus maps, plans, architectural views, optical views, table, 24 in total, all engraved on copper, many of which are folding. Hardcover, bound contemporary full polished calf, sides with gilt and blind ruled frames, spine richly decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, marbled edges; corners and extremities bit chafed, joints neatly adhered, very tender. In a very good condition. With fine, exceptionally neat interior, clean of foxing and with crisp plates. ¶ ~ First edition. The second edition was published in 1816. Another edition appeared in 1823 in Bruxelles. Although the title suggests the northern Netherlands, this work describes a journey in northern France (Dunkerque and Lille), Belgium, and the Dutch province of Limburg (Maastricht). With plates showing the facades of the city halls in Lille, Maastricht, Antwerp, Brussels and Ypres and other cities, as well as a panoramic view of the 'Paleis der natie' in Brussels - and the Manneken Pis. Also contains a plan of the canal of St. Quentin with a view of the ship tunnel of Riqueval (which had just been built, by order of Napoleon) and the source of the Scheldt.
