Pp. 3 (Introduction), 1 plate with 3 photograms with a semitransparent overlay printed with explanatory notes and accompanied by a leaf of letterpress text; 40 thick card leaves of collotype plates, each accompanied by a leaf of letterpress text; 6 (Index). Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's army green cloth, black lettering to cover and spine, cover bit soiled, inner hinges neatly strengthened with cloth; old institutional stamp and small ticket. Fair, with fine interior, all plates bright and crisp. ¶ ~ First edition. The fine plates are printed in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.
