Plus 9 (of 11) folding plates, each with about 12 engraved impressions of medals and coins (one loose, cut along fold). Plus the handsome, engraved frontispiece, by now well known for its view of two collectors in their coin cabinet, the spaciousness and luxury of which attests to the craze for medal collecting. Charming engraved illustration to title-page. Woodcut illustrated tail-pieces. Notes in neat contemporary hand to first blank prelim, a signature, old stamps (one to title-page), few first leaves bit stained at lower corner. Hardcover, handsomely bound in half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Lacks two plates, else a very good, handsome copy. ¶ ~ First Italian edition. Louis Jobert's (1637-1719) acclaimed manual, 'La science des medailles, pour l'instruction de ceux qui commencent à s'appliquer à la connoissance des medaillea antiques & modernes', first appeared in Paris in 1692/3 (Lucas). It went through several editions, and was translated into the main European languages. Lipsius p. 202. Cf. Brunet III, 549 (listing the French editions of 1715 & 1739). Provenance: from the library of the Royal College of Physicians in London, with its handsome, elaborately engraved armorial bookplate.
